False Comfort of Whistleblowing Protection Policies

The false comfort of Whistleblowing Protection Policies

Whistleblowing policies are designed to “protect” whistleblowers but the word protect comes from Latin 'protegere' – to cover upfront. Like a prophylactic—it’s a surface-level barrier, not a deep engagement with what's happening emotionally, neurologically and psychologically.

“Aggression is only rated as pleasant when it occurs after provocation.”
— Carré et al., 2010

This key insight from behavioural science confirms that, without provocation aggression feels wrong, but after feeling wronged, aggression can feel like justice. That's because our sense of justice is tied to our ancient instincts.

What Actually Helps? Practising the skill set Courageous Conversations
✅  Informal, emotionally aware and skilled dialogue which surfaces and helps contain natural responses. This creates space for nuance and understanding and reduces the natural need to act out through retaliation.
✅ Self-Regulation is the Antidote as it disrupts the reward cycle, making space between provocation and reaction. This is essential for ethical leadership

We must train leaders not just in policy, but in self-awareness. Until we account for how our primal triggers shape our behaviours, no amount of legal protection will stop retaliation.

It’s time to move from compliance to consciousness. Train for Courageous Conversations.
