Reframing Courage in Speaking Up and Listening Up

6 October 2025

Traditional whistleblowing and “speak up” narratives often emphasise the courage required for employees to raise concerns. While well-intentioned, this framing highlights a deeper problem: if employees must be brave simply to voice concerns or fulfill their responsibilities, then the organisation’s culture is already failing them.

Through the Courageous Conversations training lens, where we teach the 'how' of speaking and listening up, the focus shifts from extraordinary acts of bravery to equipping both leaders and employees with the skills to engage in open, respectful, and constructive dialogue.

In this way, the call for “courage” becomes less about overcoming fear, and more about fostering cultures of trust, accountability, and transparency.
